Color/Appearance:

Heartwood tends to be light or medium brown, and the color darkening with age.

Grain/Texture:

With medium size open pores, Teak possesses a coarse texture. The grain can be straight, wavy or interlocked. Also, the Teak has a slightly greasy or oily feel because of its natural oils. American teak has the minimum oil content as compared to other origins like African or Burmese.

Rot Resistance:

Teak has excellent standard for decay resistance, and it has very durable heartwood. Also, it is resistant to termites.

Workability:

Easy to work in almost all aspects, with the only limitation that the Teak comprises a high level of silica (up to 1.4%) which has a noticeable blunting effect on the cutting edges. Despite its natural oils, the Teak glues as well as finishes well. However in some instances it may be required to wipe the wood surface with a solvent prior to gluing and finishing so as to reduce the oils on the wood surface.

Odor:

Teak can have a leather-like odor when newly milled.

Sustainability:

This class of wood is not listed in the CITES Appendices, or on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.
