Color/Appearance:

Commonly with an olive cast, Heartwood has a light to medium brown color. Almost white to light-brown, sapwood is not every time sharply defined from the heartwood. Contrariwise, Red Oak tends to be somewhat redder, but it is not a reliable method of determining the variety of oak.

Grain/Texture:

Grain is straight, and has a coarse uneven texture.

Rot Resistance:

Very durable, often used in boatbuilding.

Workability:

Ideal for hand as well as machine tools, and produces good results. It has moderately high shrinkage values that result in good dimensional stability, particularly in flatsawn boards. Stains, glues and finishes well. 

Odor:

Has a telling smell that is common to many oaks. Most catch it appealing.

Sustainability:

This class of wood is not listed in the CITES Appendices, or on the IUCN Red List of Susceptible species.
